Melissa Rios began performing at the age of 11 in a community mariachi group based in her hometown of Las Cruces, NM. At 16 she was the recipient of the Elisa Gastellum Memorial Scholarship for mariachi vocals at the Las Cruces International Mariachi Conference Student Showcase. She has 10 years of performing experience with various mariachi groups in the Las Cruces and Albuquerque area as a guitarist, vihuelist, and vocalist.
Her original composition “Remember Me” is featured on the CD “Quickstar Productions Presents: Chill Out: An Acoustic Compilation Vol. 3" which was released in January 2008; her composition “Rainy Days” was featured on “Peace Begins At Home,” a CD made to help raise awareness and funds for those affected by domestic violence. She has traveled to Las Vegas, NV to singer/songwriter competitions and performed her original pieces for various types of events.
Melissa was part of the ensemble that premiered John Truitt’s pieces at the memorial concert dedicated to master guitar maker Lorenzo Pimentel. She was selected as a performer at the New Mexico Classical Guitar Festival Student Showcase in June 2012. She is currently pursuing her Bachelor of Arts degree in Music at the University of New Mexico. She has studied under Benjamin Silva and now works with Michael Chapdelaine. She has been a member of the Albuquerque Chamber Players guitar ensemble under the direction of Paul Nielsen and John Truitt.
