Kathryn Schwaar is a native of Salt Lake City Utah. She attended Utah State University and was privileged to work under the direction of Dr. Craig Jessop (Stanford University). She later earned her Bachelors of Music Degree in Vocal Performance from Utah Valley University studying under Dr. Tyler Nelson (Florida State University). She is currently pursuing a Masters of Music degree at the University of New Mexico.
She has been privileged to sing in select ensembles such as: The American Festival Chorus, Utah Valley University Chamber Choir, and the Utah State Chamber Singers with whom she has appeared as a featured soloist in China and Guatemala.
In 2012 she was the 1st-Place Winner of the Classical Competition, College Division, sponsored by the Utah Northern Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing. Kathryn has been seen as a featured young artist in successive seasons with Utah Festival Opera, and as a featured soloist in multiple events with Utah Vocal Arts Academy.
Passionate for her commitment to story and text, Kathryn excels in comedic and dramatic repertoire in both operas and musicals. She has sung title roles such as Suor Angelica (Puccini) and Susannah (Carlisle Floyd). Other favorite roles include Mayzie la Bird (Seussical the Musical) and Edith (Pirates of Penzance). She has been praised for her talent among her peers, her unique instrument and color, exciting power and sterling set of high notes.
She has been fortunate to work with acclaimed composer Libby Larsen, as well as Metropolitan Opera Comedic Baritone Anthony Laciura, and Metropolitan Opera Dramatic Soprano Wendy Bryn Harmer in selected master classes and concerts at Utah Valley University and Utah Vocal Arts Academy.
In addition to her excellence in performing, Kathryn has a fierce passion for teaching and is proficient in teaching Classical, Musical Theatre, Jazz, and Pop styles. Her teaching style is focused on providing students with the tools they need to feel confidant and be successful, and providing opportunities for her students.
