Born in Los Angeles, CA, Christopher Walker started studying viola at Onate Elementary in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He began playing string bass in El Paso, TX, in the Coronado HS Orchestra, led by Ida Steadman (featuring a performance in Carnegie Hall). His first professional gigs were on jazz bass at age 15 with the Dan Lambert Jazz Workshop. Christopher began classical guitar studies at UTEP with Stefan Shyga (of La Vienta), and continued with Michael Chapdelaine (UNM), and Jeremy Mayne (Albuquerque Academy). During this time, he played bass in an ABQ jazz trio called The Mellizmatix (house band of the Tricklock Theatre Company).
After graduating from UNM with a Bachelor of Music degree in Music Composition and Theory, he taught guitar and orchestra at Comanche Elementary School for two years. He began working at the New Mexico School of Music in the fall of 2011. He is currently recording, rehearsing, and teaching guitar in Albuquerque, and recording and performing with Shiva, an ABQ desert rock band, and The Earthtones an ABQ cool jazz ensemble.
Christopher also minored in film during his music studies at UNM, due to a lifelong interest in film scoring and sound design, and as a modern, commercial outlet for compositions and recordings.
"Truly, my main problem is that I love all music way too much. My main gig is Shiva, which is a desert rock band, but I also play jazz, metal, classical, electronic, and have been engaged in home recording for many years. I also have a keen interest in World music, and composition when time allows, but being a guitar player and teacher, as well as a student of guitar and teaching, takes up most of my time."
He continues to work towards national and global exposure for Shiva, as well as recording and performing as a solo artist. Shiva is currently working on an EP slated for a year-end release, and Christopher is also recording an electric guitar album to be released next year.
In 2014 Christopher finished student teaching at AHS and HHS with Paul Nielsen, who has been the guitar teacher at Highland High for over 20 years. This experience completed his Music Education Certification, and he received his license to teach K-12 Music in New Mexico.
